Zanskar is a sub district of the Kargil district, lies in the eastern half of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The managerial centre is Padum. Zanskar, together with the adjoining region of Ladakh, was momentarily a part of the kingdom of Guge in Western Tibet. The Zanskar Range is a mountain range in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir that separates Zanskar from Ladakh. Geologically, the Zanskar Range is part of the Tethys Himalaya. The average height of the Zanskar Range is 19,700 ft.

The Lamayuru gompa consisted originally of five buildings, and some remains of the four corner buildings can still be seen. Lamayuru is one of the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh, with a population of around 150 permanent monk’s resident. It has, in the past, housed up to 400 monks, many of which are now based in gompas in surrounding villages. Lamayuru is host to two annual masked dance festivals, in the second and fifth months of the Tibetan lunar calendar, when all the monks from these surrounding gompas gather together to pray.      The trip begins into the Trans-Himalayan region, south into the valley of Zanskar, one of the coldest inhabited places on earth. About 20 Kms - south-east of Rangdum stands the Pazila watershed across which Zanskar lies. We descend sharply to Bardan gompa in central Zanskar. We continue journey to South Zanskar. The most secluded of all the Trans Himalayan valleys. The western core of this complex, tangled knot of mountains was the site for Ibex.
